Mastering the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory Exam

If you live in the UK or any other country that follows the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) syllabus. You will realise HOW IMPORTANT understanding and passing the Grade 5 Theory exam is! CLICK here for a full list of countries.

Not only is it a requirement to progress to the upper Grades (6-8) but in the words of the Associated Board themselves:

"We encourage the development of theory and musicianship skills from the earliest stages of instrumental learning. As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence."

So I hope you can see how vital it is, to really get a good grounding in Grade 5 Theory.

But there is a problem.....All is not well with the education of our children (You probably don't need reminding of this fact!)....Because our schools now spend less and less time teaching the music theory that is covered in this exam.

So what does this mean? Increasingly the level that Grade 5 Music Theory represents is becoming harder and harder to obtain, as the child (or adult) has to take on board new musical concepts that they haven't encountered before.
