There isn't a great deal of chiropractor information on the internet so I thought I'd share with you what I have found and my own experiences of chiropractors.
First of all what does the word mean?
Modern chiropractic was founded by Daniel David Palmer, a grocer, who performed his first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. The term "chiropractic" derived from the Greek "chir-" referring to the hand + "prassein", to do = to do with the hands (to manipulate) dates to 1898, the year Palmer founded the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa
Not all chiropractors are alike in their practice. The International Chiropractors Association believes that patients should be treated by spinal manipulation alone while the American Chiropractors Association uses many different approaches that combines spinal adjustment with other treatments such as physical therapy, psychological counseling, and dietary measures.
My own personal experience of chiropractic began about 15 years ago when my mother suggested visiting her chiropractor (who she was seeing for a tennis injury). So I had a few sessions (to loosen up a stiff neck) and felt there was some improvement. I stopped going after a while and had a few sessions when I lived in Hong Kong and also when I moved to Northern Ireland. But I began to feel that there was never a cure in chiropractic and it began to feel a little like I was being extorted, as any relief only lasted a few days and then things would start to tighten up again. So I looked elsewhere (eventually settling on
physiotherapy
as a workable solution to my musical aches and pains).
Below is a video of what goes on in a typical chiropractic session:
