Dont Ever Give Up Really Never?

Were you ever told by your parents "dont ever give up?" I guess most of us were encouraged to carry on with some activity when in reality you had lost interest long ago. So why do some people persevere and others give up? Is it peer pressure? Wanting to achieve some goal? Not wanting to stick out from the crowd? My experience with learning a musical instrument was probably quite typical. Myself and my siblings were asked what instrument we wanted to play. My dad was playing trombone in a local orchestra and so we went to a concert and picked our instruments. My sister picked the flute, my brother the trombone and I picked the clarinet. We all stuck at it for a number of years until both my brother and sister gave up and I was left to carry the musical torch.
