The symptoms of rsi are quite easily recognised, but can affect many areas of the body.
Repetitive Strain Injury (or Repetitive Stress Injury) is caused (as the name suggests) by doing one kind of movement over and over until you strain something in your body.
Here is a list of possible RSI causing activities:
1. Reading books while looking down
2. Carrying heavy school/laptop bags
3. Use of phone/mobile leaning onto one side
4. Watching TV in incorrect position Eg. Too much to the left/right. Sleeping while watching TV.
5. Sleeping with head forward, while travelling
6. Practising a musical instrument for hours and hours
But actually the biggest culprit is working at a computer day in and day out, especially when it is not set up properly, with the everything at the correct height.
A 2008 study showed that 68% of UK workers suffered from some sort of RSI, with the most common problem areas being the back, shoulders, wrists
(carpal tunnel syndrome)
, and hands. A sobering thought for us all!
Here is an excellent video that will take you through the symptoms of repetitive strain injury and some useful tips for preventing it with some short exercises.
